10/7/15 - Katahdin Stream Campground, Lean-to #10
I woke up this morning at four thirty. It was pretty dark even though the moon was high. The trees filtered most of the light, only little spots made it to the ground. I catnapped until five thirty and then started my day. The others were also up and shortly after eight we reached Abol Bridge Camp and Store. The store allowed us to charge our phones, so we hung out a while and ate a second breakfast. Then it was into Baxter State Park and the last ten miles before Katahdin. The trail was amazing. Graded for day hikers, it was wide and mostly free of rocks and roots.
There were two fords today, but the water was up and the rangers had posted a notice advising using the high water bypass. Since it was the same mileage I took the bypass, others decided to ford. Big Niagra Falls was thundering so loud you could hardly hear someone yelling three feet from you. By two thirty we had finished the thirteen miles from Hurd Brook shelter and were at Lean-to #10 in Katahdin Stream Campground.
We met several hikers coming down after finishing their thruhikes. Mushu and Janezilla, Dancer, Buckles, Flynn, Raindrop, Treebeard and Fox, Snoopy and Whoopy all summitted today. Some have the same section outside Monson to complete due to flooding, so we may see them later. Others will call it a completed hike.
We packed our day packs for tomorrow and had our last campfire on trail. By eight we were turning in, although I think we will have some trouble getting to sleep.
